- Some of the best fiction writers got their start writing airline menus.
Erma Bombeck (and bus timetables - Alan McBride) - If God wanted us to fly, He would have given us tickets.
Mel Brook - A hundred years ago, it could take you the better part of a year to get from New York to California, whereas today, because of equipment problems at Chicago’s O'Hare, you can't get there at all.'
Dave Barry - They mention that it's a non-stop flight. Well, I must say I don't care for that sort of thing. Call me old-fashioned but I insist that my flight stop. Preferably at an airport.
George Carlin - he saying ‘Getting there is half the fun’ became obsolete with the advent of commercial airlines. Henry J. Tillman
Useful tips departmentIf you don’t eat the food you’ll die anyway;-) - If you have any allergies it’s a good idea to learn the names of the foods (or just what causes your allergic reaction) in the languages of the countries you’re visiting. Then in a restaurant you’ll able to say “no nuts” or “no dairy” and have them understand you. Do make sure you get it right otherwise you may get extra!
- If you’re going away for a long trip consider a dental appointment before you go. It’s a lot cheaper than having a problem overseas.
- When visiting unfamiliar territory go online and get a layout of the airport where you will be arriving as well as an idea of the area you are staying in.
- Don’t ever hire a taxi who has touted himself to you in the airport arrivals. Head for the rank and a metered cab. This may avoid you falling foul of unscrupulous taxi drivers etc., I think there may be some out there: be careful!
- If the hotel has an in-room safe use it and keep all your valuables in there. If the safe is an electronic one, wipe the touch keys down before operating it with a damp cloth and then dry it before entering your secret code.
- Try to do this every time you use the safe. Some of those unscrupulous ones don’t just drive taxis! Also wipe down the pad after you have keyed in your code and closed the door firmly.
Finally, when locked, press all the keys / numbers firmly. Doing this may set off a small alarm from the safe but it stops quickly and no one will pay any attention (!)
- Check on your first day whether you need to reconfirm your next flight, if so do it then. Some airlines do not require this anymore but it is still worthwhile calling them so that they at least have your contact details in case the flight is delayed or whatever. If it is delayed, you’ll have a better chance at re-booking time having done this. Most airlines offer SMS notification too now.
- Make sure if booking rental cars on the Internet that your booking is for the right city and country
